How to Build a Ferret Rescue, in 3 Easy Steps

Our rescue started with one little ferret.

Years ago, someone heading off to college couldn’t take their pet with them.

They asked if I could care for Leena, this wiggly, curious creature. Well, because of my childhood love for the movie Beastmaster and its adorable Ferrets, Kodo & Podo, I said, yes — not knowing that one ferret would change everything.

Then word got out. A friend knew someone else who couldn’t keep theirs.

Then another.

Before long, more and more ferrets were being left on our doorstep, passed along in boxes, found under porches, or surrendered with tears.

I never planned on becoming “the ferret lady,” but the need found me — and I couldn’t turn away.

But rescue isn’t all happy endings.

Some stories still weigh heavily.

There was the one who slipped away in my arms, despite every effort.

That moment stuck with me — a reminder of how fragile they are, and how badly they need someone fighting for them.

Another time, we rushed to help a ferret being held hostage by a drug addict, who wanted money to release it.

We finally got it, but it was too late to save it.

That loss broke our hearts and made us even more committed.

And then there are the ones that take patience — the abandoned ferrets, the ones left locked in cages or hiding under porches, terrified of every sound.

We spend hours coaxing them out, talking softly, earning their trust.

This work is hard.

It’s emotional.

Some days it feels like the losses outweigh the wins.

But then we see the transformation — the once-frightened ferret now curled up in a safe bed, or bounding happily into the arms of their new forever family.

That’s why we do it.
